September 2022 – Rheta Kirk on Flower Pounding

Mary opened the September meeting of the Burlington Carousel Quilters Guild at 7pm then introduced this evening’s presenter. (A review of guild business is listed at the bottom of this page.)

Rheta Kirk’s presentation was called “Inspired By Nature”

Rheta uses actual flowers and leaves to make these fabric art pieces in a process called “flower pounding.”. She stated that she has been doing pounding for over 20 years. Her first class was in 2003.

Rheta demonstrated how the natural pigments in the leaves and flowers can be transferred through the process of pounding. She had brought several “in process” pieces. She pointed out that in some cases she defines the edges of the imprint with fabric pens.

Embellishments

Rheta turns most of her projects into wall hangings. The panels get quilted, but she also embellishes them with thread and sometimes other things. Thread that Rhetha uses is 100 weight silk. Very fine. All of her pieces got passed around the room, so we could take a close-up look

Sylvia won a small gift in the nametag drawing!
